Varrick character survey

Body and Appearance

1. Describe the character's height and build. Is he heavyset, thin, short, rangy? Varrick is taller than most of the main cast, definitely over the six foot mark (I’d make an educated guess at either 6’1” or 6’2”). He’s very lanky as well, doesn’t seem to have much in the way of muscle definition, and pretty thin. He’s got slightly broad shoulders for his frame, but his over-all look is pretty toothpicky.

2. How old is he?
No canon age is given, but I’d roughly estimate mid to late thirties. I’m headcanoning him at 37.

3. Describe his posture. Does he carry himself well or does he slouch?
Varrick stands pretty straight, although you’d be hard pressed to find him standing still long. The most noticeable thing about his posture is how he’s always moving around. He also swaggers a lot, always leaning to one side slightly in his chair.

4. How is his health? Is he fit or out of shape? Any illnesses or conditions? Any physical disabilities?
Despite his lack of any muscle definition, Varrick is in VERY good shape, and very athletic. He’s able to swing himself off a bar upside down and land on his feet, no mean act. He also mentions in Book 3 that he works out every night. So despite clearly being the sort of person who can’t build any muscle mass, he is in very good shape. More of a gymnast body than football player if you will.

5. How does he move? Is he clumsy, graceful, tense, fluid? Varrick is moving CONSTANTLY, his motions fairly jerky and energetic. He’s always flailing his limbs around, gesturing and speaking with his hands. That said, when the moment calls for stillness, Varrick is also very capable of that. When sitting in a chair Varrick tends to sprawl himself, lolling to the side or kicking feet up on the table. He’s showing dominance by doing this, displaying the fact that he doesn’t care what other people think of him.

6. How attractive is this character physically? How does he perceive himself in the mirror?
Varrick is very attractive, in perhaps a particularly 1920s way. He’s got great hair he clearly works at, and he has a great presence. His confidence and self-assuredness make him desirable to others, even if he doesn’t always fit into the mold of conventionally attractive.

Varrick 100% thinks he’s hot shit, he works on his appearance a lot. Pencil mustaches take a lot of up keep, okay.

7. Describe his complexion. Dark, light, clear, scarred? Being from the Southern Water Tribe, Varrick has the same typical colouring of darker, tan skin. His skin is very clear and he doesn’t have any visible scarring.

8. Describe his hair: color, texture, style.
Varrick’s hair is THICK AND LUXURIOUS. Seriously, his hair is amazing and he obviously puts work into it. It’s dark brown, very thick and wavy, and about mid-ear length. He’s got that sort of floppy side-part hairstyle that makes it look like he put no effort into his appearance when he clearly took hours. He loves his hair a lot, it’s his best feature.

9. What color are his eyes?
Dark blue, typical of the Water Tribe.

10. Does the character have any other noteworthy features?
His very refined pencil mustache. It’s the Varrick trademark. He also has a very square jaw and a chin dimple.

11. What are his chief tension centers?
Lower back

12. What is the character's wardrobe like? Casual, dressy, utilitarian? Bright colors, pastels, neutrals? Is it varied, or does he have six of the same suit?
Varrick is a definite dandy, and snappy dresser. He keeps to his Water Tribe roots by dressing in blues and greys, as well as having the fur trims and decorations typical of Water tribe garments. But along with this, he keeps it updated and snappy, working the blue colour scheme and fur collar into a very 1920s looking tailcoat, waistcoat, and plus fours.

When staying in Zoafu, he adopts the Art Deco green and silver robes worn by its residents, still keeping a very casual swag Varrick is known for.

13. Do his clothes fit well? Does he seem comfortable in them?
Varrick’s clothes are impeccably tailored. He always looks completely at home and comfortable in what he’s wearing.

14. Does he dress the same on the job as he does in his free time? If not, what are the differences?
Being an entrepreneur, Varrick doesn’t really have ‘time off’ per se. His businessman persona is always on, and he always dresses to match it. I would highly suspect he even wears fancy pajamas and quilted smoking jackets to bed.

15. You knew it was coming: Boxers, briefs or commando? COMMANDO

Speech

1. What does this character's voice sound like? High-pitched, deep, hoarse?
Kind of mid-range, a little on the higher side.

2. How does he normally speak? Loud, soft, fast, evenly? Does he talk easily, or does he hesitate?
Very loud, and very fast! He talks a lot of apparently stream of consciousness, just saying everything on his mind without much pause. He also changes volume constantly for emphasis as he speaks.

3. Does the character have a distinct accent or dialect? Any individual quirks of pronunciation? Any, like, you know, verbal tics?
Other than his RANDOM EMPHASIS OF WORDS mid sentence, not much else in terms of verbal ticks.

4. What language/s does he speak, and with how much fluency?
Whatever language they speak in Avatar world. /shrugs

5. Does he switch languages or dialects in certain situations?
Apparently everyone in the world speaks the same language here, so he doesn’t need to.

6. Is he a good impromptu speaker, or does he have to think about his words?
He is VERY good at speaking off the fly, coming up with great arguments off the seat of his pants. He can control a conversation like you wouldn’t believe.

7. Is he eloquent or inarticulate? Under what circumstances might this change?
He’s pretty damn articulate, yes, as much as he speaks informally and uses colloquialisms. The only time someone can manage to get him to shut up is when they’ve bested him, which doesn’t come up very often.

Mental and Emotional

1. How intelligent is this character? Is he book-smart or street-smart?
Varrick is VERY intelligent, and it’s his combination of book smart and street smart which makes him particularly deadly. He is a very skilled inventor and entrepreneur, with great business savvy. But he also has the street smarts from having worked his way up to the top that makes him the master manipulator that he is.

2. Does he think on his feet, or does he need time to deliberate?
Varrick can think well on his feet, yes. But he also plans out situations METICULOUSLY. Very few scenarios involving Varrick don’t play out exactly how he wanted them too through careful manipulation.

3. Describe the character's thought process. Is he more logical, or more intuitive? Idealistic or practical?

4. What kind of education has the character had?
Little to no formal education. He’s learned everything he knows from raw talent and learning on the job.

5. What are his areas of expertise? What, if anything, is he interested in learning more about?
Engineering, business, entrepreneurship, sabotage, criminal activity. You name is really. He’d like to focus more on the engineering and invention side of his business rather than just the corporate buying and selling, as he really does love inventing.

6. Is he an introvert or an extrovert?
Extrovert, hard core. He hates being alone, and thrives on attention from other people.

7. Describe the character's temperament. Is he even-tempered or does he have mood swings? Cheerful or melancholy? Laid-back or driven?
Varrick is sort of unwaveringly optimistic and cannot ever be made to feel bad. Even while IN JAIL he stays as smugly pleased with himself as ever. He can be shown to have a few rare serious moments, but those are his choice rather than do to outside forces. The more people try to put him down the more upbeat he tends to act.

8. How does he respond to new people or situations? Is he suspicious, relaxed, timid, enthusiastic?
Varrick is VERY enthusiastic to knew situations and people. He’s very easily bored, so he always likes to mix it up with new situations.

He’s also well aware he does better with people short-term. If someone knows him for too long they tend to start getting bored of his unwavering energy or start to notice all his manipulation. So he likes to keep moving for his reason.

9. Is he more likely to act, or to react?
Act. He’s a vicious chess master of a pre-planner. Any situation he’s mapped out a solution for any way the conflict choses to go.

10. Which is his default: fight or flight?
Flight. Varrick isn’t a fighter and sees no shame in running away when things go south.

11. Describe the character's sense of humor. Does he appreciate jokes? Puns? Gallows humor? Bathroom humor? Pranks?
Varrick has a very childish sense of humour, but he loves jokes of basically any kind. His own humour tends to run on plain old goofiness rather than jokes. He also has his own brand of humour comprised of acting inappropriately for the situations he’s in and making others uncomfortable. Like cringe humour irl.

12. Does the character have any diagnosable mental disorders? If yes, how does he deal with them?
No, Varrick has complete control over his mental facilities. He might have a slight manic edge to his personality, but not enough to inhibit his lifestyle.

13. What moments in this character's life have defined him as a person? Varrick’s childhood was very formative to how he views the world. He was raised by a single father who was a very honest man and did much charitable work for others. Despite this they lived in poverty and isolation. Varrick was chronically ill and they couldn’t afford the care or medicine he needed. Varrick saw what a life time of honest living brought his father and doesn’t want to repeat that.

14. What does he fear?
Being alone. Varrick hates being by himself, he needs to feed off the energy and adoration of other people. There's a reason he got Zhu Li to share a cell in jail with him. It's the reason he has no qualms about essentially bribing people into his company, he just wants others around no matter what their reason for being there.

15. What are his hopes or aspirations?
Even though Varrick’s focus is always on making more money, he’s so rich at this point that making more money has become perhaps secondary to his need to feel in control. He likes to feel like he’s winning, like he’s smarter than everyone and always in the control of the situations he’s in. The fact that he can do this AND make lots of money is a cheeky bonus.

16. What is something he doesn't want anyone to find out about him?
People know he worked his way from rags to riches, but he doesn’t want people to know the extend of what he sees as the very pathetic existence his father lived in when he was growing up.

Relationships

1. Describe this character's relationship with his parents.
Varrick’s mother passed away in childbirth, so he never knew her. Varrick’s only family growing up was his father, who he had very little respect for. He saw his father as a weak man who was never able to get what he deserved in life and let other people take advantage of him. Him acknowledges that his father was a good person, but to Varrick that’s not really a good thing. He doesn’t have much respect for the memory of his father, no.

2. Does the character have any siblings? What is/was their relationship like?
No, he was an only child.

3. Are there other blood relatives to whom he is close? Are there ones he can't stand?
Varrick doesn’t have any living relatives. He’s certain that if he had any long lost cousins, they would have come forward ages ago looking for a piece of his wealth.

4. Are there other, unrelated people whom he considers part of his family? What are his relationships with them? Zhu Li is the closest Varrick has to family. She’s been with him from almost the beginning of his career and the only person he trusts completely. Varrick relies VERY heavily on Zhu Li, and appreciates her greatly, even if he’s terrible at expressing it.

5. Who is/was the character's best friend? How did they meet?
Varrick really doesn’t have any friends. He has followers. He likes to collect people who he finds interesting for whatever reason, and bribes them to stick around with swanky jobs or perks. Zhu Li is perhaps the closest he has to a friend, and he met her when he was still working as a crew member in a shipping business.

6. Does he have other close friends?
He seems to have developed a real fondness for Bolin. Despite using him to create his propaganda films, he does really like the kid and sees a bit of himself as a young man in him. He’s great for hanging out with and doing shenanigans.

7. Does he make friends easily, or does he have trouble getting along with people?
Varrick is very charismatic on a superficial level. He’s good at getting people to like him, or at least recognize his usefulness. What he isn’t good at, or perhaps even interested in, is getting them to stick around.

8. Which does he consider more important: family or friends?
neither, really. Money is his number one BFF.

9. Is the character single, married, divorced, widowed? Has he been married more than once?
Varrick is happily single. He’s a bit of a player, and been in several relationships, none of them too serious or lasting too long. He’s a big fan of casual sex. He avoid marriage like the plague, he doesn’t want some golddigger running off with half his wealth.

10. Is he currently in a romantic relationship with someone other than a spouse? Nope.

11. Who was his first crush? Who is his latest? Probably some sweet girl in the Southern Water Tribe he was totally incapable of speaking to. These days Varrick doesn’t really have crushes since anyone he WANTS to sleep with he pretty much can.

12. What does he look for in a romantic partner?
Lack of desire to steal all his money. Other than that he’s not picky.

13. Does the character have children? Grandchildren? If yes, how does he relate to them? If no, does he want any?
Varrick doesn’t have any kids, and absolutely doesn’t want any. That said he does actually kind of like kids. They have a similar energy level and amorality to him.

14. Does he have any rivals or enemies?
oh, LOADS. Most of Republic City at this point. There’s a reason Varrick lives on a yacht, when you screw over as many people as he does it’s best to keep moving.

15. What is the character's sexual orientation? Where does he fall on the Kinsey scale?
Not having any canon data on Varrick’s sexual preferences, my default is always to set someone right in the middle. Varrick seems to me like the ‘anyone hot enough and willing’ type.

16. How does he feel about sex? How important is it to him?
Varrick really likes sex but it’s not something he thinks about all the time. When he’s in the mood, he finds someone who’s down for it. Since he doesn’t have any trouble finding sexual partners he doesn’t have to waste a lot of mental energy thinking about sex.

When he IS in the mood for sex, though, he’s one of those people who will try anything and enjoy the fuck out of himself. Sex should be light hearted and fun in his opinion, and not anything to get hung up on.

17. What are his turn-ons? Turn-offs? Weird bedroom habits?
Varrick doesn’t like people being too clingy or expecting him to act like they’re in a relationship. Aside from that, as said he’s a very ‘will try anything once’ type and is down with most kinks. He especially likes being tied up.

Beliefs

1. Do you know your character's astrological (zodiac of choice) sign? How well does he fit type?
 Gemini, definitely.

2. Is this character religious, spiritual, both, or neither? How important are these elements in his life?
Varrick really isn’t interested in the Spirituality of the Avatar world. He’s a modern, scientific guy. If he can use religion in a way to benefit himself, he will, but it’s not anything he particularly believes in or cares about.

3. Does this character have a personal code of morals or ethics? If so, how did that begin? What would it take to compromise it?
Despite being Amoral as all hell, Varrick does have his own (twisted) moral code he holds to. He’s always in it for himself, and will easily screw someone over for his own gain, even if they are a friend. But he avoids physically harming anyone. He’s into industrial espionage, not murder.

The especially interesting thing about Varrick’s morality is that he believes everyone else thinks the same way he does. He so firmly believe everyone in the world out there is in it for their own gain that he fully doesn’t understand why anyone would hold a grudge over him for screwing them over. He has a very ‘it’s all just business, nothing personal’ attitude.

4. How does he regard beliefs that differ from his? Is he tolerant, intolerant, curious, indifferent?
He’s fairly tolerant of other people’s beliefs, although he will not hesitate to state that he doesn’t understand it. His attitude is very ‘I don’t get it, but sure whatever makes you happy’

5. What prejudices does he hold? Are they irrational or does he have a good reason for them?
He doesn’t seem to be a fan of the Northern Water Tribe, but whether that’s just to escalate the conflict for his own gain or a genuine prejudice is unknown.

Daily Life

1. What is the character's financial situation? Is he rich, poor, comfortable, in debt?
Rich. VERY VERY rich. Probably the richest person in the Avatar universe, other than perhaps the Earth Queen. He’s worth over a billion.

2. What is his social status? Has this changed over time, and if so, how has the change affected him?

3. Where does he live? House, apartment, trailer? Is his home his castle or just a place to crash? What condition is it in? Does he share it with others?
Varrick lives in his luxury yacht. It's absolutely top of the line and has everything he needs, kept in shape by a team of highly paid staff. Varrick likes to be able to stay on the move, so living off his yacht suits him just fine. He doesn't really think of it all that much except as where he sleeps and shows off his fabulous wealth.

4. Besides the basic necessities, what does he spend his money on?
...so much. Everything. Clothes. Portraits of himself. New battleships. Airplanes. Shiny things. The man loves to shop.

5. What does he do for a living? Is he good at it? Does he enjoy it, or would he rather be doing something else?

6. What are his interests or hobbies? How does he spend his free time?

7. What are his eating habits? Does he skip meals, eat out, drink alcohol, avoid certain foods?
