IC Information

Name: Varrick

Age: 38 (not canon, just an educated gestimate)

Canon: Legend of Korra

Canon Point: post Book 3

Physical Description: Varrick is taller than most of the main cast, so probably over the six foot mark, and fairly thin and lanky. He has the typical Southern Water Tribe colouring of darker complexion, brown hair, and blue eyes. His most distinctive features are his pencil mustache and fabulously thick, wavy hair. behold the majesty

Possessions: Varrick is pulled in from Zoafu with only his Metal Clan robes on his person. Once back in Republic City, though, he'll have access to his yacht again (it was impounded when he was on the run) with all of his worldly possessions on board.

Companion: I'm guessing Zhu Li doesn't count N/A!

Personality:

On first glance, Varrick is an eccentric business man - goofy and over-the-top, with strange business practices and seemingly little grasp of social etiquette. And this is exactly what he would like you to think. Probe a little deeper and it becomes clear Varrick is a deeply layered and complex man, with a frightening intelligence.

The side of himself Varrick is most happy to show the world is his optimistic attitude, eccentric taste, and unwavering energy. Varrick lives on what seems to be a constant stream of ideas and possibilities, some of them more reasonable than the next. He flits around from thought to thought, wanting to hold the attention of the room more than anything. He hates the stuffiness of typical business practice, and revels in the anarchy of his surroundings. He's also constantly craving attention. When we first meet Varrick he's surrounded by a room full of people who are all clearly there to praise Varrick and hang onto his every word. They even all go along with his idea that he was levitating, despite not leaving the ground. When it becomes clear that Bolin is the type to feed into Varrick's ego, he quickly makes the kid his protege.

Interestingly, the fact that most of these people are only paying attention to Varrick because of his vast wealth and influence doesn't seem to bother him at all.

Because of Varrick's strange manner and eccentricity, it's very easy for people to write him off. He comes off as nothing more than a harmless weirdo, always trying to cause shit but no one takes it all that seriously. Varrick is fairly blatant in his amorality and greed from the get-go, but because of his over the top nature no one really seems to view him as a real threat.

And that's exactly how he likes it.

Varrick's eccentric nature is not an act, he really does have that much energy and those number of strange ideas, but he also knows how to play into it for his own gain. He's a master of deflection, knowing how to turn a conversation away from topics he'd rather not broach. When Mako is questioning the sea captain about the attack on Asami's ship, getting dangerously close to the real answer, Varrick amps his obnoxiousness into over-drive so Lin will get frustrated and kick them out. He uses the same trick when Asami questions what he's doing in Zaofu. When she questions what Varrick was doing there, he purposefully misunderstands the question and instead turns it into a moment of existentialism.

You can see how Varrick was able to trick just about everyone he met into thinking he wasn't the criminal mastermind he turned out to be.

Because beneath his goofy exterior, Varrick is frighteningly intelligent, brutal is his desire to achieve his own goals, and entirely lacking in remorse for anything he's ever done. He's a chess master extraordinare, able to manipulate a good portion of the events of Book 2 into play. It's a testament to how well his goofy persona works at deflecting suspicion. He was always blatant in his desire to go to war, and the fact that his motivation to do so was based on not wanting to lose his wealth. He also suggests war profiteering to Asami who goes along with it without a twinge of guilt.

It's hard not to see that even when people find his behaviour obnoxious, he is HIGHLY charismatic and excellent at getting people on his side. He knows how to emotionally manipulate, get people to see his side of the argument. He's also an excellent judge of character. He stakes out Bolin as an easily manipulated target from the get-go, being able to use him for his propaganda films without Bolin ever realising he's being very slightly exploited. He also plays Asami and Korra very well, getting them to go along with his very morally dubious plans by giving them exactly what they want.

His intimidation scene with Mako is a great example of Varrick's ability to switch between personas for his own gain. He moves between harmless and intimidating, friendly and threatening at the drop of the hat, almost taunting Mako with his inability to pin him down into either one.

Despite this manipulation, Varrick is unique in the category of amoral chess-master types in that he DOES genuinely like the Krew, and seemingly most people he meets. He simply doesn't make a distinction between liking someone and not screwing them over. Varrick staunchly believes that the rest of the world thinks the way he does: that everyone is in it for their own gain, and if he has to stomp on a few people to get what he wants, hey so be it no hard feelings it was nothing personal. His belief in this is so strong that even after being arrested for his attempted kidnapping, he resolutely sticks to his guns that he did help almost all of them at some point and should be forgiven.

Varrick is an unwavering Karma Houdini, and not just because of a few lucky vine-based breaks, but because of the way he thinks. He's so very set in his ways and his beliefs that he never loses a twinge of sleep over anything he's done. This means he's able to bounce back with nary a scratch on him, moving straight into working for Suyin in Zoafu, convincing her he's turned over a new leaf.

Unlike other criminal masterminds, he clearly takes into account from the beginning the fact that he might lose, and isn't all that fussed about it when he does. He doesn't harbour any resentment towards Mako and Bolin for foiling his plan, it's all in that same realm of 'just business and nothing personal' he likes to live in. It always more about the game than the results, and Varrick is happy to admit when he's been bested by a better opponent. Once it's clear he would never beat Team Avatar, he calmly gets himself back on their good side with the donation of Zhu Li (the ship, not the assistant). He maintains when he meets them again in Zaofu, he maintains this friendly and helpful demeanor. After all, he's got nothing to gain from them at this point and his life will be a whole lot easier with the Avatar on his side.

Varrick is VERY intelligent, and it’s his combination of book smart and street smart which makes him particularly deadly. He is a very skilled inventor and entrepreneur, with great business savvy. But he also has the street smarts from having worked his way up to the top that makes him the master manipulator that he is. It also means he's comfortable working with underground elements such as the Triple Threats, and it's heavily implied the Sting operation was not the first time he's used gang activity to help his own ends.

Varrick can think well on his feet, yes. But he also plans out situations METICULOUSLY. Very few scenarios involving Varrick don’t play out exactly how he wanted them too through careful manipulation.

In conclusion, life is great if Varrick likes you and you are never in a position between him and making more money. Really it's best for everyone.
